Artist Statement

In Havana, in the early 1990s, Cuban art emerged out of the blue onto the world market. I had just started working and still didn’t know how to make a living from it, since my work dealt fully with illustrated personal stories. I came from theater, where everything—or almost everything, was done based on a love for the art. Then Metálica emerged, a series in which I made metallic elements to stick on my body. Metallic not just because of the metallic value of money, but also for that heavy metal group that we all know, and that, in my youth, distanced me from my friends. In those days I couldn’t stand them (Metallica): but today I can.
